Memorial Day Fun

It’s the unofficial start to summer and whether you are hitting the road or having staycation, it is important to remember the true meaning of Memorial Day. So, gather your family, friends, and neighbors and have a backyard BBQ or picnic. Remember to say thank you to an active military member or veteran. Hopefully the ideas below will be a part of your day. Happy Memorial Day!

Patriotic Raspberry Coconut Cake

Ingredients: For the Cake

1 box yellow cake mix

2 eggs

1 egg white

1/3 cup applesauce

1 tablespoon coconut oil

1 pint raspberries

1 teaspoon sugar

For the Topping

Blueberries

Raspberries

Cool Whip

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 350 F degrees. Grease the cake pan.

2. Mix cake mix, eggs, applesauce and coconut oil together. Pour cake into cake pan and set aside.

3. Mash raspberries in a bowl and sprinkle with sugar. Stir together to dissolve. Drizzle raspberries over cake batter in a zig zag pattern. When all of the raspberries are on the batter, take the end of a spoon or a tooth pick and swirl raspberries into the batter.

4. Place in the oven and bake for 18-20 minutes until the edges are golden.

5. Let cake cool completely and then top with cool whip and decorate!

Enjoy!

5 Ways to Say Thank You

1. Call up a veteran or family of a veteran and say thank you!

2. Tweet your thanks by using the hashtag #wearegrateful. The tweets are printed out and given on postcards to troops worldwide.

3. Fly your American flag to show respect, honor, and pride.

4. Write a letter to active military members. Young children can also draw a flag to go in the envelope.

5. Make patriotic cookies for veterans, especially those in retirement homes. Deliver as a family and spend time talking with veterans and hearing their stories!

This Week in Country Music

Another week has come and gone and more country music news has been made. Here are the five stories you should know about.

1. Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert are moving out of the Sooner State and heading to Music City. The famous country couple just purchased a mansion in Brentwood, Tennessee, out side of Nashville. Welcome, y’all!

2. Her secret’s finally out. Ladies, you can finally have legs like Carrie Underwood! Recently, the ‘Before He Cheats’ singer dished her leg workout to Glamour. See how you can get those perfectly-toned legs on: http://tasteofcountry.com/carrie-underwood-leg-workout/

3: The bad boys are back. Could there be another Outlaw in Country Music movement? Darius Rucker recently said on sports personality Dan Patrick’s radio show that the new Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings from the Outlaw movement are Luke Bryan and Eric Church. Patrick asks, “But there’s so much money in country now that can you be a bad boy and be crazy like Waylon and Willie used to be?”

“Yeah man, we’ve still got those guys,” Rucker says. “You know, Jamey Johnson, he’s a bad boy that’s for sure, and he’s doing well. You know, like you said Luke and Eric, Eric’s probably the closest we got to Waylon & Willie I think.”

Do you agree with Rucker’s comments?

4: A few country singers are throwing their cowboy hats into the ring for charity. On March 10th, Kenny Chesney, Darius Rucker, Tim McGraw, and Nashville’s Charles Esten will attend the 6th Annual Nashville Honors Gala, benefitting the T.J. Martell Foundation for leukemia, cancer, and AIDS research.

5: Is there anything more special than hearing a feel good story? In “News Roundup” from Taste of Country, country singers share their favorite experiences at St. Jude’s. Take a look at how Miranda Lambert, Lee Brice, and more have been impacted by this organization.

Your Home-State, My Home-State

Image

Have you ever wondered what famous singer is from your home-state? Are you from Mississippi like Faith Hill? Or Oklahoma like Blake Shelton?

In a new study, redditor Ooosh-E turned data from RIAA’s list of the top 250 selling musicians in the United States into a map of the United States. Check out who is the top-selling musician from your state. For North Carolina, my home-state, it’s Randy Travis. One thing I like about this map, many country singers are the top-selling artists of their home-state 🙂
