Southern Cornbeard

Been stuck in the house these past few days, due to the winter storm? If you are like me, you are probably starting to get cabin fever. An easy cure for this “disease” is to cook.

Hopefully this quick recipe for cornbread will make it to your dinner table tonight.

  • Ā¼ cup sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • Ā¼ cup butter, melted
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk

  1. Preheat oven to 400Ā°.
  2. Melt butter in a skillet (cast iron is the best). Once melted, set aside for now.
  3. Whisk together flour, cornmeal, baking powder, salt in a bowl.
  4. Mix eggs andĀ buttermilk in a separate bowl. Then, combine with dry mixture until smooth.
  5. Add in melted butter
  6. Pour batter into skillet. Bake for 30 to 33 minutes or until golden brown.

Southern Household Tip: Uses for Baking Soda

july 1

There are about five or so standard household supplies that I keep on hand and use for everything…and I mean everything. Over the next few weeks, I’ll introduce you to some of my favorites, starting with my all-time favorite-baking soda.

Baking soda is a great product with multiple uses for cooking, body care, and more!

1: Combined with water, baking soda makes a great body and face exfoliate.

2: Mix with toothpaste and hydrogen peroxide for a teeth-whitening toothpaste.

3: Place a box in your refrigerator to remove those pesky odors.

4: Makes cleaning the toilet just a bit easier.

5: Sprinkle on fish before cooking and it removes the odor.

6: Baking soda is the perfect scrub for fruits and vegetables.

7: Add water and you have a new way to polish silverware.

8: For fluffy eggs, mix 1/2 teaspoon baking soda to every 3 eggs.

9: Pour vinegar and baking soda down a drain to get it unclogged.

10: Sprinkle onto carpet and let stand for at least 30 minutes. Vacuum up to remove odors.
